OUR STORY
This is us, this is our little family. What you do not see, is our extended family. They are on the other side of the camera. Celebrating just being together. This particular weekend Penny’s Drop Inn allowed us the perfect place to all reunite. We were given a chance to reconnect, to gather, to share food, tell stories and create memories through shared experience. For that we are so grateful, particularly because it was the last time we were all together.
Way back in 1995 our family moved to Cromwell. It was a quaint little town established when the Dunstan Dam was being built. The perfect place to raise a family. We quickly became locals and since then have watched the surrounding areas flourish. Queenstown has become a real bustling tourist hub, known for its adrenaline experiences, thriving township and incredible views. Wanaka is quickly following in its footsteps, although many would argue its the more “laid back” Queenstown. Its equally as beautiful, the people fizz on the adventure activities, however it still maintains its “small town” vibe. As a family, we loved having these incredible destinations on our doorstep. Although it has taken us venturing beyond Cromwell, and New Zealand on our OE’s to really appreciate what Central Otago has to offer.
In 2016 Des and Lynlea (our parents) decided that despite their children all moving on, Cromwell was their home for good. It was bustling with energy and showing strong signs of growth. So, they took a risk, put themselves first and made the leap to purchase their very own block of land. Here they explored, planned and implemented their dream of owning an accommodation on a piece of land that allowed them to slow down and live the lifestyle they wanted. One they could share with friends, family, travelling strangers and of course a few animals.
Despite copious set backs and a global pandemic, Mum and Dad persevered, chipped away at the section and the building and were able to open their doors in December 2020. There was no influx of energetic, excited travelers like they hoped. The crippling tourism industry made those first few years very challenging. They had poured everything into Penny’s and were disheartened there was no one to share it with. Despite the disappointment, Mum and Dad made the most of the slower pace. Their pet dogs loved the freedom to roam, their goats (Penny and Michelle) kept them on their toes, their horses entertained them on the quiet(er) days and the introduction of chickens certainly kept them busy (and fed).
Over the years, local and international travel started to thrive again. Cromwell, as predicted, became a destination town. The Introduction of the Dunstan Cycle Trail and the Water Park have encouraged all types of people to the area along with the Speedway, Highlands Motorsport Park and of course the stunning Lake Dunstan. Mum and Dad took a risk, planted their roots and they couldn’t have been happier that they did. Life was good, they were meeting so many lovely people through Penny’s Drop Inn. Dad’s enthusiasm was contagious, he was excited to expand and develop the property for guests but also themselves.
Then Dad got sick. Priorities changed. Family was all that mattered and making memories was Dads prerogative. We did not argue, after all, it’s what we valued too. Dad was a creative and hardworking builder who loved the outdoors, adventure and ending the day in good company with a cold beer. His dream was to build a hub that brought people together. A place where they could relax, share kai and unwind after a full day. Its no surprise that this is how we spent our final days. Dad quickly teaching us how to run this place, whilst still experiencing adventure, laughing together, sharing tasty food and sinking the odd cold beer.
Dad passed away in July 2025. Myself, my sister, my brother and our Mum have come together to keep this place alive and to build on his vision. And just like Dad, this place energizes us. Even though we are juggling our careers, businesses and families, we love spending time here, meeting all the people that come through this place, hearing their stories and seeing them enjoy what Central Otago has to offer. We are grateful that you have put your trust in us, not just once but time and time again to provide a safe, comfortable and relaxing place to stay.
